Event Recap: AIDS Walk NYC 2012
/Hi Dreamers,
On May 20th, 2012 we participated in the AIDS Walk NYC in Central Park. As mentioned in a previous post, AIDS is an epidemic that affects all Americans, however it disproportionately affects low-income and urban communities (our target demographic), where there is generally less knowledge about the disease and few resources dedicated to prevention and treatment. With that said, we thought that it was essential for D.R.E.A.M. to do its part in helping to raise awareness and eradicate AIDS in our communities.
Through the collective efforts of over 3,500 teams the AIDS Walk raised $6,014,822 to assist thousands of men, women, and families who are living with HIV/AIDS, and they are still counting! If you were unable to walk but still would like to donate to the cause through D.R.E.A.M. you have until June 15th, 2012 to make a contribution! Click here to make a donation.
The event was a great experience for our scholars, friends, family, and the D.R.E.A.M. Team. We enjoyed beautiful weather and a cool breeze for the duration of the day. It was great to witness thousands of people out walking for a good cause. There were marching bands, cheer leaders, and DJ's from local radio stations stationed along the the route to offer support as we progressed. Along the 6.2 miles we recieved "shout outs" from spectators and made a plentitude of friends as we listened to some inspiring stories about people's motivation to participate in this year's Walk. Some participating teams had really unique t-shirts and signs and there was even a gentlemen walking with a radio providing music!
A big "thank you" goes out to all persons who supported us in this endeavor through financial contributions, emotional support, words of encouragement, and their presence during the Walk. For those of you who were unable to attend the event, a full recap will also be featured in our upcoming Spring Newsletter. To view all of the pictures from the event, check out our Facebook album. If you haven't done so already, please take this time to "like" our Facebook page!
Thank you again for all of the support! Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
